Silk Taffeta Sale!!!!

Fabric Mart is having another sale. This time, silk taffeta is almost all $9 a yard. There are a lot of stripes but also some lovely solids and even a gorgeous silver brocade. I ended up with some sunny yellow silk (I want Snow White's cape, darn it!), the silver brocade (I have the same pattern in red and hot pink...both for $15 a yard!), and some lovely ballet pink and white thin striped to remake that one faux zone front 18th C gown. It's perfect for that.

As with all fabric mart sales, the inventory will change rapidly. If you see it, just put it in your cart or else it will be gone. Also, check back tomorrow - they sometimes add more.

Too much to do and no time

Of course, Fort Fred is next week.  I can probably just fix the green jacket and wear that rather than trying to make the cotton striped dress like I wanted to.  We'll see.

May 6 is Atlantian Crown and I'm very excited.  There are few people I'd like to see win and a few people I hope just get the stuffing knocked out of them quickly.   :-)The site allows pups so Miss Abigail will be there.  I'd like to make her a simple cape and finally finish my embroidered chemise (parts are done) but I have no idea how much I'll get done.

The weekend after that is las Vegas so nothing will get done that weekend.

I also need to finish up my Grad Papers (at least one tomorrow will get done) and update my blog.   I've been working 10 hour days (10 1/2 today) to make up for missing work on Easter Monday.   Since I want, desperately, to have a half day for my birthday, I'm working at least 9 hour days M-Th this upcoming week.  We'll see how much I get done grad school wise.

I bought a new radio transmitter for my iPod in the car.  The old one died - it wouldn't charge the iPod anymore- so I had to get the new one.  It seems to work well enough so far.   I'm really glad I got it because dealing with just sat radio and it's 100+ channels was so a first world problem I didn't like.  :-D

I bought a ton of silk in the latest fabric mart sale.  I can't pass up $5.99 a yard silk.  It's just not possible.  I now have tangerine and forest green dupioni (5 yards each) and a lovely soft "sunlight" yellow dupioni as well as a couple of yards of red and mauve checked taffeta.  The yellow dupioni is slubbed in such a way that it looks more like raised stripes than slubs.  I'm thinking kirtle still for it or maybe a nice fitted gown?  Wools work better for the fitted gowns though...

Also, I might suck it up and finally fix the a/c in the truck and get the transmission fan installed.  I'll call up a few places tomorrow to get estimates....  I know how much the parts are and I know how to install the transmission fan if I really need to.  I'd much prefer a professional did it though....The a/c has been broke for umm...three years?  Maybe four....  I'm not sure.  However, I think the a/c being broken contributed to the transmission overheating so...if I want to tow, I need the a/c fixed.

Picture posting how to

To post pictures

To post any picture copy <img src="http://www.anywebsite.com/image.jpg" width="350"> Post this in the "html" part of the post and not the "Rich Text" part (there is a tab that switches back and forth). Once you add the code with your image address in the anywebsite part, you should be able to go back to the editor and play with it more. It's a pretty easy cut and paste once you have the address of where the image is hosted. Just make sure you have the image address (normally, it's a right click, copy image address) and not the entire webpage.

If you want to post your own images, Photobucket and IPernity both have their own "cut and past HTML code" so you don't even have to copy and paste the above. Just upload the picture and then, in iPernity, go to "actions" on the right hand side of the image. Under that, there is "share html/bbcode". Go to that link and copy and paste the HTML. For photobucket, the html is always over to the right hand side to copy and paste. I recall flickr having something similar but I don't use that complete lack of service anymore.

Glittersweet has a good write up with additional information as well on how to post pictures. I'm just offering the quick and easy coding way. I've always used the HTML version because it gives you the ability to size the photos appropriately.

And...now we have the new LJ user agreement

I'm sure a few of you just went "Yeah, yeah, whatev" and clicked on. Don't. This is a BAD idea. There are a few points that I'm very concerned with and I'll try to explain why.

First:

Please note that, User shall be subject to Article 10.2 of the Federal Act of the Russian Federation No. 149-ФЗ if more than three thousand Internet users access the Blog (the Blog’s page) within 24 hours. So what does 10.2 say?

media should include reliable information about

its owner, or otherwise face, distribute information,

the form and amount that is sufficient to identify that person.

The owner of the site in the network "Internet" is obliged to place on belonging

his website information about its name, location and

address, e-mail address for the application,

specified in Article 15-7 hereof, and

may provide the possibility of sending this statement

by filling in an electronic form on the web site in the "Internet"

(In red. The federal law from November 24 2014. N 364-FZ -

Assembly of the Russian Federation, 2014, N 48, Art.

6645). From here

In other words, if you get over 3000 hits in 24 hours to any single page on your blog, and you don't have "identifying" information that pinpoints you to you, you can kiss your blog goodbye. Not a huge deal for most of us, normally, but imagine if that lovely botnet comes back like during the Russian elections a few years ago and we all suddenly get a bunch of random new visitors? Of course, this isn't terribly scary because it's not terribly likely. Read on...

7.3 User who created Blog shall be responsible for such a Blog as well as for the Content posted therein.
7.5 User who posted comments in Blog and User keeping such a Blog shall be jointly and severally liable in respect of such comments.

While I'm fine to a point with 7.3, why should I be held responsible if someone else posts something in the comments of my blog? What if I'm at work and can't delete a spammer quickly? What if someone post something disgusting in the comments? Why should I be held jointly responsible when it's not me writing it?

7.5 is the one that really has me thinking of leaving LJ completely.

9.1.2 In respect of any Content which constitutes intellectual property, User provides to the Administration a non-exclusive (simple) license to use his/her Content in order to provide the Service by reproducing his/her Content as well as by making it public for the entire period the Content is posted on the Service. If User participates in any rankings or if User’s Content is used in any editorial projects of the Service, User provides to the Administration an additional authorisation to modify, shorten and amend his/her Content, to add images, a preamble, comments or any clarifications to his/her Content while using it, and in certain cases based on the Service functions, an authorisation to use User’s Content anonymously.

If I'm reading this correctly - anything you post could be made public. Now, this is a translation and I might be reading it wrong but it looks like any content you provide LJ - so a normal blog post- can be used by LJ. LJ will make that content public, if it likes, on the service. Also, if the blog owner participates in that whole rankings thing, then LJ can edit your contect when they post it as a highlight. Now, what it could also mean is only if you have things set to public, in which case, most of us are fine. However, this is starting to get pretty scary....

9.2.7 post advertising and/or political solicitation materials unless otherwise directly specified in a separate agreement between User and the Administration;

So...what constitutes political solicitation according to Russia? No matter what anyone may think of our current political divides in the United States, I don't like the idea of Russia being able to delete individuals just because they are posting political posts. Granted, it says political solicitation but that's a pretty broad legal term. It means " A request or petition intended to obtain something" so, would be the "Stop Westbard Development" - which has become a local political issue in the neighborhood I work (and my parents live) be considered political solicitation if I ask others in the area to sign a petition? I think everyone can see where the problem is with this one.

12.5 The Administration may send to User information related to the Service as well as third-party advertising using the email address provided by User.

Yay! Spam! /facepalm

Netflix Original: The O Λ

It's bad. Seriously, it looks good but it's pretty ridiculous. Spoilers, Sweetie )

It's so ridiculously dumb to the point I wasn't sure this was a comedy or meant to be a serious artistic expression of nonsense. So, please, for your own sanity, don't bother with. Stick with the Crown or Stranger Things. Those are much, much better.

Last sewing project of 2016 up!

I've written up the entire dress diary entry over on blogspot. It's a super fun dress. I wore it with modern undies - ie, not 1920's. The only issue I really had with the dress is that black lace snags on absolutely everything. However, it wasn't that much of an issue and it was easily dealt with so, eh.

Yay! My Auto Twitter can post pictures!

A couple of months ago, I received an email telling me that my auto blogging service for twitter would be closing it's doors come the end of October. They mentioned a couple of other auto bloggers that would work but I wasn't sure. Only today - three days after the fact- have I signed up for dlvr.it. However, I'm actually excited about this one for one reason - it can post pictures! Automatically!

So when I post up on the Extant Gowns blog now, my twitter feed will automatically populate with the posts to include the top picture from the blog! I really think being able to show the dress up on Twitter before people click the link will help greatly.

Yes, I'm excited about an auto posting thingamajigger.

Because I'm still not sure what I'm seeing...

I found this...dress? Fabric vase? Previously unknown bird? on ebay. I'm not sure if it's a Lady Gaga styled dress (that you'd have to wear with trousers/leggings/something! underneath!) or if it's just a punch of feathers someone stuck to some fabric. I'm going with it's a UFO that someone thought to stick all their hair feathers to...

Rockbox

This is going to sound like an infomercial but I really love Rocksbox. Rocksbox is something I saw on pinterest that looked interesting but I never signed up until this month. It's the netflix of jewelery. You tell rocksbox what your personal style is and they send you three pieces every month. ...Did I mention this will sound like an infomercial?

It's $19 a month which is a bit $$$ when I'm used to spending that on a piece of jewelery or two. However, I also hate buying a piece, getting bored of it after a few days or not wearing it for months. This allows me to rent pieces that I like (you have a wish list that gets saved) without storing it. I can live with that. If you do like the piece (I LOVE the earrings I got in my box), you can buy them at a discounted rate.

As for shipping - they give you a return label, a reuseable mailing bag, a box, and velvet bags for the jewelry. Shipping back is easy - just like netflix used to be. :-D

I'm keeping these.  They ended up being $25 and I can't express enough how much I like them.  Of course, I told the stylist I have a thing for turquoise so I guess that's why she threw these in the box.

I've been wearing either this necklace or the other lovely one I got over the past week. The fun part is all the guys at work LOVE the jewelry. They all wanted to know where I got those lovely "vintage" pieces because their wives would like it too.  If you want to sign up, use my code "Elizabethcbff29".   You get a free month from rocksbox if you are one of the first five to use the code (it refreshes every month so every month a new 5 people get a free box).

It may be about $20 a month but I'm completely sold on this idea.

35 Hours Until Pennsic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although I'm super, super bouncy excited, there is something going on at home that is making me mad. Stupid Comcast. I called them a few days ago because the Hallmark channel - which I leave on for Abby and Jasper- was all pixelated. They told me I shouldn't even be getting HD channels and promptly canceled them. What. The. Heck? I'm told I can pay $10 extra a month for a service I was getting. I'm also told that I'm getting HBO and Cinemax - which I don't want because honestly I never watch them- free. I know I don't need HD - it was a nice to have- but it make me furious that they just decided to downgrade my service like that. This is what Verizon did. Unfortunately, I have a choice - Verizon or Comcast- if I want internet. I could say screw the entire thing and just go straight to no TV, internet only but I'm not sure about that yet. I'll wait until after Pennsic.

At work; it's sort of funny. The supervisor for our section is worried about me leaving because he's scared that nothing will get done now. (Pretty much all the reports in the queue are mine most of the time. That's not to say the other two guys aren't doing work; they tend to answer requests in email rather than write reports. I do the long term stuff while the 24 year old does a lot of the "watch what this new gadget can do!!!" and our small team supervisor makes sure we can actually even get our reports out at all.) Of course, with the move in the middle of all this, nothing will get done anyway (like the computers will even work at the new place for the first few days, ha!) so, to me, it's not like it's a big deal. However, it's nice to know I will be missed.

I still have sewing. I still have laundry. I still have chores that need to be done. I'm going in for 2 hours tomorrow and then I'm hooking up the trailer, getting air in the tires, and doing the load/unload/wash everything/reload thing for the rest of the day.

My reddit exchange secret santas were AWESOME this time around. First, from the oldschoolcool Santa:

My new feather headdress.

My new 1920's necklace.

And then, from my Arbitrary Day Santa:

My new everything radio and Arwen LOTR necklace. The everything radio actually works well! It has a flashlight, hand crack, solar power charger, USB, and, yes, a radio. And a siren. Still haven't quite figured out a good use for that other than terrifying the cat....and myself. Because the button is also the on/off switch for the radio so....yeah.

Will post tomorrow in super hyper OMG!PENNSIC! mode. :-)

Go UK!!!!!!

It was a close vote all night but 52% to 49% voted to leave the EU. This is terribly exciting to me. Now, since N. Ireland and Scotland voted to stay in, we'll see if the Scottish Referendum comes back up for yet another vote. Also, apparently France, the Netherlands and Italy have all called for referendums of their own regarding staying in the EU or not. If France leaves, the EU is dead.

D'oh! Ebay, how badly can you really screw up? Wait, don't answer that.

A few days ago, ebay decided it would be brilliant to do away with the decades based categories in the Vintage Clothing section and go with things like Men's Vintage Vests or Women's Vintage Dresses. /Facepalm To say the least, it's made searching for anything vintage near impossible. One of the best known ebay sellers, Carolyn Forbes, is one of the many sellers who has been affected by this change - and none for the better. I personally love what she said here when ebay had a "discussion" about the change.

If you are just as revolted as I am about the idiotic change, there is at least something you can do about it. I've written a rather detailed post over on Extant Gowns about how to get to the "Tell Us What You Think" link to submit your complaint. Please, share the Extant Gowns post with anyone else you think might be affected by this change.

Praying for the families of EgyptAir

For those just waking up EgyptAir MS804 diappeared off radar leaving Paris, France. 66 people on board. They think the plane went down in the Med. No word yet if it was terrorism or not but, given recent history (Paris Attacks, Brussels, Sinai), it was terrorism.

Apparently, I can get to Dreamwidth but not LJ

Eh, whatever.

Way more important stuff to talk about! There is a piece of cloth found that may be part of Elizabeth I's dress! Squee!!!!! It might be part of the Rainbow Portrait dress which would be FABULOUS. I think another strong contender would be the Hardwick gown. However, no one is quite sure yet if it is one of her gowns. Rather, it's being labeled - for now- as part of a 16th century dress. I'm really excited to see what comes out about it.
