I'm currently helping with a project to get out of my office and bug a new set of people. Well, for the project, they've brought in people from ALL over...mostly NYC and Detroit. One of the girls is staying at a hotel in the heart of DC. I overheard her say something about "I was told there was a mall nearby the hotel but I couldn't find it". The guy she was talking to told her about Tysons down the street and how there is a Target not far away either. I walked over and asked if she was going to Tysons. She said that she was staying in DC and she was told that the mall was nearby but she didn't know where it was. I told her there were three I could think of in DC and asked where her hotel was. Her hotel is right near Chinatown.
Well, I tried to think and I couldn't think of a mall right downtown there. I told her there was a mall over in Georgetown and one in Arlington but I wasn't sure about downtown. She then told me that everyone in her home office kept telling her she had to see "the mall" and that she'd be staying really close to it and everyone in DC knew about it.
I tried not to laugh. I really did. It didn't work. I told her "Oh! The Mall! You are right next to that. I thought you meant shopping!" She looked confused. I had to explain the archaic english and that a mall meant a large rectangular piece of land, not shopping. What we calls malls today are really arcades. I don't think she got it because she asked "So is there shopping on the mall?" umm, no. It's a big piece of green land in which you can see the Capitol on one side and the Washington Monument on the other. At this point, the guy she had been asking was laughing too (he was from the same office as she was). she then kinda glazed over and went "Oh." Then the gentleman and I told her about all the museums around the mall but she didn't seem interested....

What country are you quiz? )
No I'm not! I'm Neapolitan! We just happen to fall under Spanish rule in the 16th c because of all the intermarrying...that's all! I'm Italian, darn it! :-)
