I've grown up in the mid-Atlantic. Although I'm a navy brat, I've spent most of my life in either Virginia (VA Beach) or Maryland. I learned very early on that anything below the Masion-Dixon line is "the South" (with the capital S) and that Maryland is "still" occupied territory.
I've been trying, at work, to explain to a bunch of people from such exotic places as NYC and Detroit why we act the way we do around Washington DC. They don't get why we don't honk our horns. To me, this was astounding. We honk our horns all the time in DC. If you want to hear where they don't, go to Atlanta. But, according to them, we don't. I just blamed it on southern manners. To honk your horn (especially in the Deep South, like Mississippi, not our whimpy south up here despite that Richmond was the capital and all...)is like giving your fellow driver the bird. It's not nice. It's not something you do unless absolutely necessary. That, and pretty much the entire area is nothing but a bunch of passive-aggressive drivers anyways. We complain about the idiot in front of us or that cut us off on our journals. :-)
Another thing that shocked our Northern visitors was how expensive everything was. They thought NYC was the height of high priced items and housing. I laughed at them. The only place worse than here is Beverly Hills!
They also wanted to know why people don't look at you. Everyone looks down. I had to explain that it was just part of the culture. If you don't see other people, then they don't exist and you don't have to acknowledge them. That, and considering it's still summer and we haven't hit the 10 mark for exploding manholes this year, everyone is watching out!
Anyway, they now believe that the DC area is part of the South...so, maybe the South has risen?

In other news, I need to go to the fabric store and get more canvas. I ran out and can't do the gown of evil without it!

Hmm... I don't know. I only consider places I can get Sweet Tea in a restaurant "the South." I couldn't in DC, but could in Virginia & can't south of Orlando in Florida.
