I think I know where the ugly circle fabric idea came from..

...when it comes to the costumes from the Other Boylen Girl movie. Since I think I've figured out that the creative license for this in particular movie has to do with "Oh! I like this cuff from this culture and I like this partlet from this one which wasn't worn until 20 years after this type of sleeve...ect" I think the evil mid-20th c fabric is meant to envoke this fabric:

...okay, so I still don't get the evil french hoods...unless the costumer made them that way because the hoods were french....ohh.....
