It was a blast!
padawansguide and I carpooled up to Baltimore. Although I think we hit every red light on the way through Baltimore, we did not get lost and we did get there 15 minutes ahead of time. This despite the fact Miss Ginsie had to take herself on an excursion through the woods before we left. One of my neighbors helped by getting a piece of bologna to bribe the pup out of the woods. It worked. Climbing over thorns and sticks in a silk gown is interesting.
At a gorgeous Victorian tea house in Baltimore, we met up with
bauhausfrau,
jehanni,
jennylafleur,
girliegirl32786, Marilee and George. We had our own special room upstairs (it's a very good thing we didn't do 1860's. Hoops and the staircase would NOT have mixed) that was beautifully decorated. If it weren't for the huge 30 some inch tv, I think it would have really felt like we had been transported to 1849.
We each ordered our own pot of tea. I have gingerbread which was yummy. There was so much food! The biscuits, scones, sandwhiches, and cheesecake were all delicious. Everyone kept pulling out their digital cameras and taking tons of pictures of the room and each other. :-) I took a few and they are up at my flickr account. If the link doesn't work, my account name is JubileeL_insaneone.
The play was Murder on the Rue Morgue. It was great to watch that and then the various acts that followed. An actress playing the part of Sarah Whitman talked in character regarding her remembrances of Poe. She was quite amazing. Of course, all I could do for a couple of minutes is think "Is that taffeta and black lace in her skirt?" but that's me. :-)
After here performance an actor playing the part of Edgar Allen Poe spoke which was also fun.
When all the performances concluded, we started on the picture taking again. :-) Which also involved other people taking pictures of all of us in out 19th c finery. The curator of the Poe House would like us to take part in the celebrations next year (200th birthday celebration!) which is supposed to have many VIPs. It really sounds like a great celebration and I can't wait!
I will have a new dress next year. Yes, I know, the dress isn't as bad as I think it is. Mom saw this picture and said "That's the dress you thought was horrible?!?" Yes, I didn't like it. It just didn't come out the way I wanted it too. It looks odd to me at least and it's not up to my usual standards so...I don't like it. I didn't hide beneath my coat the entire time (although it was tempting since it was 15 f outside!).
I thought up a couple of ways to "improve" it but I think I'm just going back to my original idea for the dress and get some nice cotton that I like...about 8 yards of it, and play. Until I find the fabric however, I'm going to work on an 18th c gown. I was going to work on Mom's gown but she can't decide on a lining so I'm going to put that on the back burner with about 12 other projects....
