So, Mom came and kidnapped me Sunday night. We went to the ER Monday night. Tuesday she took me hostage and went down to the beach house. I hadn't been down to the beach house yet (they've had it since Jan) but it was, for the most part, very relaxing. The first couple of days the couch and I got to know each other very well. I don't think I got up much more than to move to my bedroom. My room at the house is all decorated in roses and other flowers.
By thursday I was up to moving around and managed to go have tea with the Queen at the Lost Colony. I still wasn't up to more than sitting and smiling but I did get to have some fun. We went on a behind the scenes tour of the Lost Colony...and, of course, ended up in the costume house. They have over 10,000 costumes because they never, ever, throw anything away.
....::snark moment::
The costuming wasn't what you'd expect for something that has been going on for 70 years. You'd think they'd at least make a better attempt at "period" wear than princess seamed strapless bodices! Or the striped and colored chemises... Or the pannier for a farthingale...or the ruff without a shirt...or the poorly done faux chemise that, every time the poor dear that was wearing the gown with the faux chemise moved, you could see her underarms. They were shaved thank goodness. But yes, bad bad costuming. I've seen better in a B Sci-Fi movie. They said the QE1 gown was worth $25,000. about $24,800 of that was designer label. The rest was rayon velvet and glue on gems; Pretty but not worth anywhere near the price they qouted.
The tour guide was shocked when my Mom, Dad, and I started asking questions of the seamstresses. Questions like "Do you use muslin drapings or patterns?" or "How does one become a costumer designer for the Lost colony?" The last one was my Dads...and even he thought the costuming needed improvement. Maybe I'm rubbing off on him?
::end snark::
Okay, so we played around the gardens a bit. I mostly sat on benches and smiled for the camera. I really looked terrible but I was too sick to care still. Friday I felt a lot better and went shopping. I got a new pair of jeans for $20 (I really needed a new pair) and to a shop with lots of cute little things where I got a new black shirt. I'll probably wear it to work tomorrow with a red tank top and my new jeans. Hey, it's decent! And after missing a week of work, they really can't ask for much more than decent. Anything is better than my fairy slippers and pjs with my pink and blue robe.
