I just don't get it. What am I missing?
Sep. 21st, 2007 05:31 pmWhy in God's green earth would you go to a function sponsored by X or join group X or attend a church/temple/synagogue/mosque when you don't agree with what they preach? I get maybe trying to see the other point of view, sorta an anthropological expedition. Maybe go to that synagogue, that church, ect once or twice just to see what it is like. Maybe attend a rally or event that you either have no interest in or have an opposing point of view with just to understand why people do what that do. But to join a group or a religious congregation when you clearly have no interest in adhering to their principals? I just don't get it.
I've seen this in a lot of groups I've either joined or am affiliated with in some way. I've seen it at church. I've seen it at work. I've seen it in the SCA and other groups I've belonged to. The SCA is probably one of the best examples of people who don't want to adhere to principals established by the group but yet still come to events. What the heck? You have no interest in history, you have no interest in attempting anything resembling history, you just want to get drunk with your friends? Go find a bar, you moron.
Like I said, I've seen this elsewhere but I don't want to get into politics. I have confronted people before and asked "Wait, if you don't believe in X and you don't like Y and you don't follow Z, why did you join this group?" The answer is always the same lame excuse, "Because my friend did." or something very similar to that. Why don't you find a group/religion that matches your beliefs? Can't find one? Start one. It's not exactly hard in this day and age. Make a webpage and you're good. Don't get all huffy because, oh my, the rest of us don't share your views and don't over extend ourselves to include you. If you don't want to make garb, wear armor, or read about the middle ages; guess what? Most of us in the SCA don't have much to talk to you about then. Why? Because that's what our group does. It's not that we don't have other interests; it's that we don't get why some schmo like you would bother coming when you clearly don't care about what we care about.
