I'll write a longer post tomorrow regarding all the Thanksgiving stuff and how that went. For now, there was an incident today that must be reported.
I went over to Mom & Dad's early-ish this morning because the power went out at my house and I was supposed to go over anyway to get a ride with Mom to go to Jeannie's (sister in law) baby shower. (make sense so far?) Well, before getting into the car to head on over to Gwen's (French cousin) to pick her up and then go to the restaurant, I let Miss Ginsie outside. Big mistake.
Mom & Dad do not have a fenced in backyard. There is a hedge barrier but it's easy for me to get through. I didn't put Ginsie on the chain because most of the time, if she does run off, it's only into our next door neighbor's yard and they could care less. (Really. They have a dog too and Tonner comes up to the back door all the time to see if Shiloh, Mom's dog, can play.) She also sometimes goes to the house that is caddy-corner to my parent's back yard and up to their deck but they know who Ginsie is to and shoo her home or point and laugh at the dog. Basically, it's more of an annoyance to me when I'm trying to get her inside then it is to anyone else. Plus, I've finally gotten her trained to come when I whistle...or so I thought.
So, while I'm putting her outside, Mom is telling me stuff; I need to go get other stuff done; and I just let the pup run into the backyard. I closed to door, figuring she'd be a couple of minutes, and went to get various presents organized and sign the card my Mom wanted me to sign before heading out. Well, a couple of minutes pass and I go back outside to call for Ginsie...and she is no where to be seen or heard. I mean no where.
Normally, even if she's out of sight, I can hear the jingle of her tags on her collar to let me know where she is so I can go grab her. I whistled and nothing. No sound what so ever. I figured she went through the neighbors yard and she's just on the other street so I grabbed my coat and her leash to go check it out and....nothing. I walked up and down the street (it's basically a very big gumdrop shaped street) calling for the pup and I couldn't hear a thing. I didn't see a thing. Ginsie was no where.
So I get in the car and start to drive around. It's about 40 degrees here I should mention. I stopped everyone I saw and told them to keep an eye open for a little white puppy dog who lives down the street. Mom called me and told me she had driven up the church (top of the street) and was going to walk around the parking lot to see if she was up that way. This was about 25 minutes into Miss Ginsie being "lost". Mom and I were both frantic. My brother, Randy, had taken up patrol of the backyard in case she came back that way.
I drove back home and got back out to walk around because I couldn't hear anything in the truck. I knew if I could just hear her collar, I could find her quicklyand yell at her the entire way home to tell her that she's in big trouble. I picked up the leash and walked up and down the street again, praying that the pup was okay and hadn't gone down to the main road. The main road (Massachusetts Avenue for those familiar with the area) is extremely busy. There are always cars on the road.
I get up to a couple of blocks away when my brother Joey (the youngest) drives by. I told him that Ginsie was missing and to keep an eye out for her. He promised he'd help Randy survey the backyard for the evil little wolf and I went up towards the elementary school. My Mom use to sub at the elementary school so i was hoping that maybe Ginsie just followed her way up there since she knew that route.
About half way up there, my Mom calls to tell me that Ginsie came home....while yelling at the dog and telling her that she is very very bad. I get home as quickly as possible to reinforce the "you are an evil puppy for making us worry like that! Don't try to be cute! You aren't! You are pure evil!" stance that Mom had going on.
Like I pointed out eariler, Ginsie never goes far from the house. Actually, she never goes out of her hearing range of me. She won't listen all the time, but she'll stick to an area where she can hear me still..and where she can see me. Oh yes, Miss Ginsie (who is quickly getting renamed Mischief) never actually left sight of the house. She was in her normal route....in the neighbor's backyard.
Randy decided to see if he could get a better look from my parent's bedroom which has a bunch of picture windows to overlook the entire backyard. From up there he saw the white bundle of fur and evil sunbathing on the neighbor's back porch. (The area my parent's live in is somewhat hilly so trying to see Ginsie from the ground view was impossible) He went out and grabbed her and then called Mom. Mom called me and I came home.
Ginsie knew she was in BIG trouble because Grandmom (my mom) yelled at her. Grandmom never yells at Ginsie. I do when she does something bad followed by a simple swat on the nose (nothing hard, dogs just don't like their noses to be touched). today I was so terribly worried about her (more of a fear of someone picking up and taking home the dog of evil than her being hurt) that she just got a "You are evil" speech followed by no hugs or being petted for 7 hours. (we left her with Shiloh at home so that's why she didn't get petted for a long time) I think she got the message but from now on, she stays on the leash! I probably should add Joey stated I shouldn't give her dinner for being so bad.
Tomorrow's posts should include the remainder of the day at Jeannie's baby shower and Thursday's interesting events in which I show off that yes, I do remember some of my French. Okay, not much but enough to get Nicolas to snort/laugh.
