I tried to cartridge pleat the skirt only to, once again, realize cartridge pleating is just not something I can do. Box pleating? Fine. Knife pleating? Kids stuff. Cartridge? It looks well...interesting to say the least. Thank God I didn't hem it first so I can just cut the evil off the top and not worry.
I'll just knife pleat the skirt to the bodice. It wasn't the look I was originally going for but it will work. I should be mostly finished with the gown by tomorrow.
The coat is the next project. I have the black lace for it. It's gorgeous stuff. The coat will be out of some black velvet I have lying around. I also have this lovely lilac cording that is the same color as the dress that I might use on the coat.
After all that's done, I just need the petticoats and I'll be set. Woohoo!

Have you discovered the trick of using a strip of 1/4" gingham to space your pleats? That's the only way I can handle cartridge pleating. You just baste it inside the skirt and then go over a certain number of squares on the gingham for each pleat, depending on how small you want the pleats to be. Measuring and marking just completely exhausts my patience before I even get to the hand-sewing part.

Good luck!

I have a feeling, even if I did that, it would still look all wonky. :-) There is that one thing that is the bane of every costumer. For me, it's cartridge pleating. I might try it though on a smaller project, like a ruff. Thanks!

yea I know what you mean about cartridge pleating the one time I did it i hated it with a passion. i have been avoiding it ever since but probably will have to concede defeat and try it again. its the mid 16th c italian persona that begs for the stuff

I've gotten away with gathering and knife pleating so far (or paneling) for my Italian stuff. It would look lovely to have cartridge pleating but I know it's just not something I can do.
