I've been looking for more info on the faux peacock tail looking thing from the 1570-1590's. Queen Elizabeth I wears a sholder version in the Ermine, Rainbow, and Sieve portraits. The Sieve one is interesting because it looks more like an early collar that has a pleated veil sewn to the top edge. The Rainbow one looks like Fairy wings but it's got the shawl attached, just like in the early woodblocks of the Venetian ladies.
So...I attemtped to see how the heck this thing was attached. After all, carrying something like that is hardly efficent for shopping! Holding on to something like that all day would get boring very quickly and tiring....not exactly a good fashion and one that wouldn't stick around for 20 years unless there was something else holding the faux tail up!
So, I looked. And I looked....and I found.....this! It's a HAT! They probably stuck the early ones into the back of the hair, making it nearly invisable from the front (kinda like a very big comb) but giving the awesome effect. Later, it becomes something resemebeling an attifet (type of hat, guys) with huge wings. This should make this a wee bit easier for me. Just wrap my hair up into a bun and stick the wires into the bun like hairsticks!
