Sample the Beer Before You Buy It

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Washington lawmakers have approved a pilot program that will allow beer and wine tasting in 30 grocery stores statewide in an effort to market local products.

The measure now heads to the governor, after passing the Senate 29-17 on Monday. It earlier passed the House.

The one-year program, strongly supported by the state's microbrewery and wine industries, allows shoppers to sample as much as 4 ounces of beer or wine. Supporters say it allows small wineries or breweries with no marketing budget to get their products out to the public.

But opponents contend the program sets a bad example by exposing children to alcohol consumption.

This is far better than the "Oh no! We can't have any alcohol in a grocery store. You need a special permit off site in a county run building!" here in Maryland. Personally, I'd much rather have a kid drink some wine than be exposed to half the stuff on the magazines at the check-out counter.

He he! My high school class field trip was to the Olympia brewery, even though we were mostly 17, and drinking age in Washington is 21. We even went in a yellow school bus...

Well, I can see where that would be educational...since at 17 you would be considering colleges and you minus well know what you will be drinking until you graduate...then you skip to wine..or vodka...or both. It depends on the job you get. ;-)

There's already wine tasting in VA, if you go to whole foods on a week-night they've got several bottles out and don't even card (or don't card fogies like me anyway).

I really should just go across the border one day for the wine tastings. I've heard that world market sometimes has them as well in DC...

This is what has caused the entire state of Wisconsin to descend in chaos. Exposing children to alcohol! Oh no! God forbid they learn something about consuming in moderation rather than stealing liquor from their parents' liquor cabinets and dabbling in debauchery with their friends.
