My hair is too dark for sharpies....or at least, it would take about 20 of the same color just to do half a braid. Hmmm...maybe if I use ribbons wrapped around the braids instead...
Oooooh--after my 18th C Wigs and Makeup class, I actually know how to do that: all you need is 5 colors of switches (say, from Laceys or Dr. Locks), and some clippies! Now, to do it with an 1830's twist, you need to lift it ABOVE the head...lol! Very cool!
:-) I think any faux hair with my hair might look off. My hair is really long and thick so what I might do is use ribbons to bind a few of the braids in the appropriate colors and then try putting it up with enough bobby pins to set off a metal detector.
Ribbon might be a very pretty adaptation. Have you ever tried using wired ribbon to add structure? I don't know if it would work, but (as you know) many of the extreme baroque and rococco styles used all sorts of supports like wire for lift and structure--so it seems a possible tool. Ideally, I think the style shown includes some cornrowing/french braiding techniques to "tie" the braids onto the head as they are designed...but I can't picture managing braiding such a complex design on/behind my own head! Definitely need an accomplice braider.
