The partlet edging at the neckline is clearly gold but I'm not sure about the edging along side the blue ribbons. It looks like that might be silver. Thinking back to when I saw it 3 years ago, I think it was silver but I'm really not sure. Anyone else think it's silver? Or is it just the way the light is reflecting off of gold? Any other ideas?

[Poll #1188760]

Either way, I'm sewing the blue ribbon down on the edges using either gold or silver thread to get the edging look. :-)

I wasn't sure. It looks gold but it could be a tarnished silver...

That's kind of what I'm thinking in terms of the tarnished silver. If you look at where the ribbion edging meets with the edge of the partlet, they are clearly two different colors but I'm not sure if that's just trying to show lighting differences or if it's really two different colors.

I can't imagine Eleonora de Toledo wearing a partlet with tarnished silver on it. Especially not in a portrait.

I'd love to say it's gold but I've seen too many places where they mixed gold and silver. I'd go with silver personally

Silver would actually be better in my cause because I have some real silver thread..one spool that would look really neat on this partlet. However, if it's gold, I want to stick to the original as much as possible.

Where is the painting located? I'm pretty sure I've seen that painting in person but not sure if it was during a touring exhibit. There is also another painting that has a very similar partlet and I KNOW I've seen that one. Perhaps you could contact the museum that has the painting and ask?

That's the problem. I've been trying to find out and all anyone says is that it's "Eleanor/a de/i/of Toledo" by unknown person. This one was on tour up to the Philly Museum of Art back in the winter of '04/'05. I saw it back then. I'll keep looking though...

EDIT: I found this page which shows both and...it's doesn't help much. It looks a little bit more like it might be silver in the "darker" painting but it's still hard to tell.

I think it's gold, but I don't see blue ribbon - I see dark grey/black. Odd.

That's the problem with not being about to see it in person. :-) I do remember it being baby blue ribbon. The only reason I remember that is because I remember thinking "It has pink and blue! Cool!". Now, if I could remember what the blue was edged in, that would be good.

Looking at a pic in La Moda, the ribbon is a bluish colour... could be a tarnished silver??? as suggested. there is a definate silver line on the netting (between the gold loops)
On the right (actual) shoulder the lighting is different and has a bluish tinge and the netting... so I would be thinking this could be used on the ties to show lighting as well???
Having said that, and looking again...
the tie appears to be one length that loops 'u' bend through the left (actual) side ofthe collar. Here the tie is a different colour to the silver on the netting- a more purply blue on the tie....

hmm.. fat lot of help really....
:)

At this point, I think I might do a couple of test samples. I'll lay a couple of pieces of ribbon down with the gold edging and a couple of pieces of ribbon down with the silver. Which ever looks "closer" will win.
