For most events, as long as you have garb, a mug/goblet/cup of some sort, and something to sit on (blanket, chair, ect) you are fine for any day event. I'd go to the war just to see the fighting and get more ideas for armor. It might help you in creating your own armor and you can always ask people how they made theirs. :-)
