isabelladangelo: (really?)

I stopped by the NGA during lunch today (and then felt sick immediately afterwards). I wanted to look at a couple of painting and see if I could get the Pompeii exhibit in on my lunch break (I did! Woohoo! Pretty things!) However, that's not the point of this post. The point of this post is things I heard while walking through the 13th-14th c medieval art gallery.

Most of my F-list can probably imagine what the gallery looks like even if you haven't been there. Pretty icons of the Virgin Mary, Jesus, various Saints, ect. grace the wall of the museum in the gallery all from, well, the 13th-14th c. So, the first thing I hear is from a high school girl in reply to something her friend said "Oh no, I think they are all Catholic art." Well...ummmm...okay...yeah...sorta. ::sighs::

Then there was the mom with her two young boys. She walks in and says "This gallery is the 13th-14th c guys. That means this is all from the Dark ages right before the Renaissance." ::head explode::

At least the exhibit was *gorgeous* and I got to see this one painting of a lady wearing a blue dress with pink sleeves (pink sleeves! hehehehe) that I didn't realize that was there. Also, did anyone realize that Saint Lucy's green cape like garment is lined in the loveliest teal?

My husband specializes in "instant docent" whenever we go to museums, zoos, etc. He reads the exhibit placards and then gently corrects people who tell their children patently false info. It gets pretty funny when he's asked how he knows what he's talking about and he points to the signs.....

I admit, I did tell the lady with the two boys that the dark ages were much earlier and that this was all Medieval and Gothic art. ....however that only confused her.

Oooh, I've been looking for a colour version of that Barocci painting for quite some time! Thank you so much for posting it!

:-) The NGA has a lot of their paintings up online with some great detailed pictures. The pictures are also pretty true to the original colors.
