So I finished the right half of the corset. I put decorative stitching up each of the seams. It has a mix of metal and cable tie boning. It looks fab so far. The problem? It's too big. I'm going to have to sell it and make a different one. One day, I'll make a corset and it won't be two sizes too big. Honest!

the finished size should be 2" smaller than you so you have squishability :)

Think of how much better the final will be now that you had a "practice round"!

yeah, I want it a bit tighter than that because I tend to loose a lot of inches through out the day. I'm happier with at least 3" of the waist. I wanted 5" so I could have it even tighter as I continue to loose weight.

I'm trying to think that way. :-) Right now, I'm also thinking that I can sell it on Etsy for at least $125 or so. It will so go to the England Plane ticket fund.

When I draft a corset pattern I do a mock-up out of poster board covered in duct tape. The poster board is stiff like boning and the duct tape holds it together and prevents ripping. I just draft the measurements directly onto the poster board and then cut it out and cover it with tape, then tape the seams together and then depending on the style, use a large needle to put lacing cord through the back, or I just duct tape the front.

I don't know if that will help you or not.

The mock up I did looked like it would fit. Unfortunately, as is typically the case with me, the seam allowances I put in and the actual seam allowances are two very different things. I ended up adding an inch and a half overall to the corset. That doesn't matter much for most things but on a corset it's a disaster.

I'll try your method for my next corset project. Thanks!

I always use a quilters ruler to add seam allowances so that it is even and precise, especially if you are going to be machine sewing you will be able to match it to the 1/8th inch and you shouldn't have any trouble.
