For everyone still thinking of watching Avatar or not; don't. I went to see it to see these "amazing" 3-d effects. If that's the only reason you are going too, save your money and by the 3-d DVD/Bluray of Journey to the Center of the Earth. It's far more fun and far less preachy.

All Avatar is is Ferngully with aliens rather than faires. Honestly, it's the EXACT same plot. You don't really need to change much at all. Throw in a bit of Surrogates (which is far, far better)and, that's it. That's the entire movie. There is absolutely NOTHING original to it AT ALL. I can pick out every single plot line and idea from another movie easily. How this thing got nominated for anything is completely beyond me. Save your money and use Netflix instead.

Hey, while I agree with you on the originality aspect 100%. I am stil contemplaiting seeing it in 3 D at the Imax in alexandria fro teh 2. time.

I mean, it is sad that you didn't get out of it what you expected (I think it is dances with wolf done again) but they remake movies, replay dramas all the time. I am still amazed by teh 3D and the fact that is is basically all computer generated and I loved the smiles of both main characters. They used to be so mechanical in animation but these faces had so much expression I was amazed. OTOH I had no idea that the technology was going to be transferrable to DVD or Bluray. (I was surprised that journey to teh center of teh earth was rather nice a movie ) Let's be honest here. Avatar wasn't shot for adults ;) and if you are 14 you really haven't seen ferngully or Dances with wolfes in two reruns already ;)

As I said, I am still considering going again inspite of the absolutly glaring plot flaws, the blueprint and token characterizations and some other issues I agree the movie is having.

Honestly, most of the 3-d wasn't that great. Yeah, the CGI was good, but, so what? It's the same stuff we saw with Polar Express. And it's nothing that you can't wait until DVD for.

I will disagree to the 3d aspect not being worth it. It was very much worth it to me and my husband who has seen Polar Express, Dances with Wolves, and almost all the other movies that have similar plots. It wasn't about the plot, but the beautiful cinematography and the feeling I was transported to another incredible world. Even the critics who could easily see the plot a mile away still enjoyed the beauty of that planet, the digital emotions coming through from the actors faces, and the 3d effects. I was enchanted, and for me that is a rare thing. I can't wait to see it again in Real3d.

To me, it was the same type of 3-d as in Journey to the Center of the Earth and I just enjoyed that movie more. Maybe it was because Journey to the Center of the Earth was the first 3-d movie I've seen since King Kong but -to me- it really was nothing more than Ferngully revisited.

Meh. I did find the plot pretty predictable, but I don’t get why so many people have such a problem with it being similar to other films. That’s kind of how archetypes work. :-/

For me, it was that it was that the plot, the flow, even some of the characters were exactly the same as the children's cartoon movie from the early 90's. I half want to go back and watch Ferngully to see if even the lines are the same -it's that blatant. Honestly, I think the writer of Ferngully could sue over Avatar and win.

This is totally why I have no desire to see that movie.
(This, and the fact that I'm totally turned off by things that are so massively over-hyped. Yeah, I'm contrary like that. :-P)

Couldn't agree more, this was more like a tick in the box. OK I've seen it, now can we please have Alice in Wonderland already...

Someone described it as DancesWithTheLastOfTheFernGullyPocahontas, which I thought was so spot on!
