I has hoops!

Those are my ugly stays (they fit!) and the new pocket hoops made in a rather unconventional way.

I believe it was [livejournal.com profile] madamekat last year at Costume Con who had the tie-able bustle? I had been thinking about that and wondered if I could adapt that to make a pair of pocket hoops that are really travel friendly. The hoops I ended up making can be rolled up or lay flat in a suitcase.

I took about a yard of muslin, cut it in half, sewed up the edges and started to create three tucks in the fabric. I sewed down the tucks, cut a slit so I could reach my real pockets beneath the gown, and then cut twelve 18"~20" pieces of ribbon. I placed the ribbon inside the tube created by each tuck and sewed it down just on one side with the majority of the ribbon still hanging out. On the still open side of the tube/tuck, I placed a duct tie cut to the length of the tuck and slipped it inside. I then sewed up that side with a ribbon coming out of it. (I hope that makes sense!)

For the top, I folded the edges over and slipped another 40" ribbon through the top edges for a "waistband". The top edges sort of naturally gather at the hips once you have the ribbons where the duct ties are tied up tight to create the shape. All and all, a pretty easy pattern to get something, I hope, looks reasonable and you can easily slip into your suitcase!

Thanks! Simple, but it looks right beneath the petticoat.
