Storvik Novice

Saturday was hot but that wasn't surprising. What was surprising was seeing the autocrat wear a black velvet Elizabethan tall hat, a heavy black skirt, a high neck chemise, and -what looked like- a suede tan Elizabethan jacket ALL DAY. She looked beautiful but just thinking of wearing the same thing made me break out in a sweat. I have no idea how she did it.
I ended up wearing a linen chemise, a red silk "Florentine" dress (it's high waisted and laces up the front), and my gold apron. When I left the confines of the dayshade, I did have a straw hat. Ginsie didn't play dress up because it was really about 90F. Although I wish I had brought some of her outfits just to show to people. Next time!
Another surprising feature of the event was how little people there were. I know Novice isn't one of the huge events but, normally, I don't know well over half the people fighting. At one point, I knew every single person fighting and I think only 2 or 3 people who were fighting were not from my household. All the rest were.
However, it being really small made for some great finds at the silent auction. I think Beatrix (sp?) was in charge of it and came up with the e-bay style auction settings. It allowed you to "Buy it now" which meant that everyone that figured that out quickly began to organize their own piles of fabric and books to buy it now. :-) I ended up with some heavy twill, dusty blue cotton, navy canvas (can't have too much canvas for the bodices!), a lovely purple acetate that I think wants to be a forepart (the design is very period, I just can't remember which book I saw it in), and The Tailor's Pattern Book.
During Court, I sat under the dayshade still because I had Ginsie and didn't want to move my chairs and her water bowl over the few yards. I could still hear court fine from where I was but it got funny when I got called in. I had to bring up Ginsie but traded that "escort" for another. Carlisle first took Ginsie, which was fine, but Lady Tirzah yelled at him (which was also fine. We all tease/yell at Carlisle!) and told him to give her the dog and for him to escort me up into court. It became quite the game.
I received an award of Excellence which included a very pretty little box (with mirrors!) and a wonderful gold needle.
