I bought a laser pointer the other day. It was $2 at petsmart. I figured it might be interesting and, for $2, I was willing to give it a try.

Both Ginsie (dog) and Jasper (cat) watched as I took the shiny new keychain object out of it's packaging.

Me: *points shiny new silver laser pointer at floor to see what the dog and cat will do*

Ginsie: Why is there a red dot on the floor?

Jasper: It's a red dot! On the floor! We need to kill it!

Ginsie: Let me grab it first.

Me: *does the whole infinity symbol with the laser pointer to see if the cat and go will move*

Jasper: It moves! *tried to catch it with his paw*

Ginsie: *tries to catch it with her paw when it swings her way* It mov... *looks up* ...wait. Mom? What's in your hand?

Jasper: It moves! It moves! It moves! *keeps trying to catch the mysterious red dot*

Ginsie: Mom! *sits and then jumps up* I want to see what is in your hand! Lemme see!

Me: *shows dog what is in my hand*

Ginsie: *licks it* Not food. *walks away disinterested*

Jasper: Hey! Where'd it go? *the second I get the dot to reappear once Ginsie walks away* It. MOVES!!!! *tries to pounce the red dot*

Ginsie: Umm...kid? It's Mom. She has something in her hand that produces a red ... eh, whatever. As long as you aren't bothering me. *looks at me before she jumps* I'm going to sleep in the chair. Call me when he gets a clue.

Jasper: It moves! It moves! It moves!

This has been going on for two days now. Ginsie realized -quickly- that I controlled the red dot. Jasper has yet to discover this. He believes the red dot lives in the China cabinet and has been waiting for it to come out and play again. With the laser pointer, it's incredibly easy to get the cat where I want him. I just shine the laser and I can make him go up and down stairs, away from the door, whatever I need. It also tires him out. :-) Ginsie keeps trying to take it out my hand. I think, if she had a thumb, she'd use it to annoy the cat. :-)

:-) It's great! I also find it really funny that Ginsie figured out very quickly what was making the red dot and Jasper has yet to figure this out.

LOL! We have a similar situation in our house. Our two boy cats go crazy for the laser pointer, but our girl cat couldn't care less. She just looks at your hand/the pointer and then gets bored and wanders off. So funny!

Hmm...I wonder if it's a male/female thing and not a cat/dog thing? Must experiment with Mom's dog, Shiloh. :-) He might fall for the laser pointer. Shiloh is known for not being all that smart....

My Humility figured it out about 4 minutes after I got the pointer. Now she bats at the red dot for a few swipes, then comes over to me for scritches. She's figured out that if I have the lazer, I'm 'engaged' and so MUST be willing to adminsiter scritches. Right after I turn off that shiny stick-thing that rules the red dot.

Lol! I wish Jasper was that intelligent. He's not. I shined the red dot once this morning at around 7:30. He was still looking for where it lived a half hour later. Ginsie seems to watch it only because she knows the cat will pounce it and it will be amusing.

ROFL, that's so funny. Mine was the exact opposite. Both were interested until the cat figured out it was us. Then he stalked of in the whole "how dare you try and trick me" stance The big horse of a dog I have on the other hand still goes nuts after the little red light. I wonder if its an age thing... Kitty is 6 dog is 2.

My Old Man Cat is the same. He just gives me this look that screams LAME and goes and lays down.

Sebastian on the other hand (before he got so fat) used to try and climb the walls after it.

Cute but not incredibly bright.

Oh, maybe. Ginsie is 8. Jasper, we think, is 1. Again, I need Shiloh, Mom's dog, to experiment with. He's 8 as well.
