Titanic Anniversary
Apr. 15th, 2012 09:37 pmI'm watching a rather good drama called Titanic that apparently was a Canadian mini series and premiered here yesterday. (Why did they not advertise this better? They showed three parts yesterday and only the fourth part today. Grr..)
In honor of the disaster, I wanted to post a few links.
Faces of the Titanic Crew It's interactive and shows photos of some of the crew.
Five Myths about the Titanic portrayed in Film I know I'm probably one of the few people that simply cannot stand the movie Titanic. Sorry, but Rose was a total product of a late 20th Century imagination and nothing like what even a free spirited 1 st class lady would have acted like. All it was was another Romeo and Juliet (1996) movie for Leonardo DiCaprio.
The BBC has a lot of excellent coverage on all the events over the past couple of days. My own Titanic story is a bit sad. My great-grandfather was on board a freighter that responded to the Titanic's distress calls. He said, by the time he got there, he could only save 8 people and he could still hear the screams as people clung to icebergs, freezing to death. According to my great Aunts, he'd cry every time he told the story. I think we sometimes forget that the Titanic was, in some ways, the teens era's 9/11. As much as the Titanic itself is a time capsule, the ripple affect from it's sinking is still felt today. From lifeboats, to how we few transportation safety in general is all due to the loss of 1500 people this fatefully day, 100 years ago.
