Mom and Debbie (my cousin/aka "West Coat Mom") are going to the Garment/Fabric district in L.A. this Saturday to buy me silk. They would like to know if there is any specific stores they should try for my silk taffeta and silk dupioni. Does anyone know if there is a specific store that does have a great deal on silk? Any stores to avoid? Thanks!

Michael Levine is fun - it can be pricy but they've got sale tables worth checking out.

Home Fabrics is the place with cheap silk taffeta, and I hear Fabrics and Fabrics is good too.

Fabrics & Fabrics is the place to go! The silk is toward the back to the left. Home Fabrics is good too, a bit more selection but slightly higher prices than F&F. I usually go to F&F first and if they don't have what I want I go to Home.

There are other good little shops I've found silk in (none of which I can remember the names of) if you are willing to haggle and know what you are looking for but those are the two with the largest selections (apart from Michael Lavine but you really pay full price there.)

At Home Fabrics, they have amazing deals on bolt ends. Remember my raspberry pet-en-l'air? Along with the Regency open robe and pink and green court dress. Bolt end for $8 a yard. You have to buy the whole thing, but often they're really good prices and reasonable yardage.

And another Fabrics and Fabrics recommendation! I love that place :)

I second (3rd?) The bolt ends at home fabrics. I got some silk brocade (1.5yards) and taffeta (5 yards) there the other day for $5 a yard.

Me too on the bolt ends, and look thru the whole pile because sometimes there are two bolts of the same fabric so you can get a boatload for cheap! Also, the isles have bolt ends in them too, not as cheap as the 8$ or 5$/yard sections but still a good deal and some of these are SUPER expensive normally.

Agreed, Home Fabrics first for their clearance silk at the end of the rows - my mom and I picked up two fabulous silk taffeta stripes in January, for $8/yard, along with some great silk taffeta solids for $5/yard. Totally worth it if you hit it at the right time. Fabrics and fabrics is my other favorite - he has a great color selection - priced $12-$16 a yard, but you can get whatever color you want, which is great. There are a few stores with the cheap german silk taffeta you may want to avoid unless you want the thinner stuff, and lots of home decor stores with great quality silk taffeta AND high prices, but if you can find one of the home decs with remnants and they are willing to make a deal, that can be a good score too. good luck! :)
