dragon cape!

Before I destroyed my right hand, I went to my brother's and asked the two older nephews if they knew what they wanted to be for Halloween. The oldest declared he wanted to be a pumpkin again (meaning wearing his cape I made him last year). The two year old still has a very limited vocabulary and didn't seem to mind any of the ideas I asked him. The oldest informed me that the middle child didn't like playing dress up. Well, we'll change that!

I thought a cool looking Dragon cape might work. It's something that timeless, rather easy to create, and yet he'll be able to wear for years to come without major embarrassment...unlike what I plan on doing to the 3 month old. Bwahaha...the newborn will be a candy corn. :-)

I cut out a simple circle cape out of true lime green fleece. I then cut out random shapes for the "wings" to window pane the cape. I covered the overlap with brown zig zag trim on the outside so it looks nice and neat as well give the colors a nice contrast.

In the above picture, one side of the cape is pinned for the window paned wings and I place a bit of the trim down so I only had to sew each window pane once. The other side is what the cape looked like before that - a skeleton wing!

Both sides are pinned in this picture with a few scales added down the back of the cape to show the true "dragon" look.

Everything sewn before I added the hood. I only hope the two year old likes it! We'll see. The three month old gets no choice. He will be a candy corn. His outfit is a simple fleece romper that is both yellow and orange with a white cap. Very simple and practical for a 3 month old. His Dad (my brother) likes the idea as well. :-)
