Folding wooden stool from the late 16th to the earlish 17th c.

Avaliable online! for under $30. I know I've seen them at Wally world for even cheaper. So, yes, you can have period camping furniture without spending everything in your checking account.

These kind of fold stools go even earlier. The big bugaboo in lh is not stools like this but ones with backs. There is no provenance for backs. My own opinion is either our ancestors had better backs or they used them so much that none still exist! (we know they had foldstools with backs durin the ACW, because they were seen in photographs; there are only a few in existence, though; I think that most just went on a campfire!)

I've seen some similar ones dating back to the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, so yeah, early. :-)

My big problem is that people tend to assume anything remotely period when dealing with camping supplies for the SCA must be $$$. That's why you see so many "earth pimples" and metal chairs. Now, granted, I have my metal chair at Pennsic but that's to use as a joke (it has Strawberry Shortcake on it). I also have my two Savanrola chairs.

This stool would be a great piece to any first time LH camper or for anyone looking to upgrade from modern to a more period encampment. I would love to find a depicition (or an extant) of one with a folding back too. However, I'd also much rather see a wooden director's chair than one of the metal ones simply because, in my mind, my persona wouldn't see a slightly oddly shaped wooden chair as anything other than a chair. A metal one? Even the King doesn't have one! Hope that makes sense....

Jenny Geddes must have been a hell of a woman.

I was just reading up on her and appearently she started the English Civil War. Somehow, I think it was a bit more involved than one merchant lady throwing her stool at the preacher but hey, at least she went down in history as a lady not to mess with!
