This article was just found by a lady on one of my lists. It's in regard to period patchwork/quilting. The cushion dates from the 15th c and is scrumptious. It reminds me of the inlay work I've seen on the 16th c tables from Italy.

I have seen this picture before and have some serious misgivings on the actual date of the item. It could have been added after the death considering that I have seen close up pictures of this and there is no and I mean no kind of staining what so ever from decomp. I think they need to do much more work on actually dating this object. Not saying your friend is wrong just that there hasn't been much put out about it from the find. I always doubt things until I see hard proof.

Oh I forgot to mention that yes there are some solid examples of patchwork in period. I can send you some pictures if you would like. If you haven't guessed I have done some pretty heavy research in the quilting department.

I'd love to see some examples. I just liked this one because it looks so much like, at least in color, like the tables of the 16th c from Italy. The table below is an Italian Table that is currently in the V & A.

It reminds me of the cathedral staned glass windows. I agree with the author the circumstances and the craftsmanship indicates that this wasn't one singular item. otoh it obviously was a valued possession, and it *could* be traditional for burials ;) I think it looks lovely and once the thing spreads there will be pillowcases like that spring up at every fair and *war ;) don't you agree?

The funny thing was, even before I saw this article, I was thinking of making a quilt based on the Italian tabletops for Pennsic next year. Now I can have documentation! Once I get the trailer built, the inside will look wild. Patchwork quilts and pillowcases, Pink dupioni silk curtains, painted ceilings...it will look interesting once I get around to making everything. Next Year!
