Boy Injures Eye With Skewer At Ren Fest

POSTED: 11:51 pm EDT August 31, 2008

CROWNSVILLE, Md. -- An Anne Arundel County fire official says a 10-year-old boy seriously injured his eye at the Maryland Renaissance Festival when he accidentally stuck a skewer in his eye.

It happened around 5 p.m. Sunday at the festival in the 1800 block of Crownsville Road in Crownsville.

County fire spokesman Lt. Frank Fennell says the boy was eating "Steak on a Stake" when he pulled the wooden skewer out of his mouth and then somehow stuck the skewer in his eye.

Medics at the scene requested help and Fennell says the boy was flown to the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore with a serious eye injury.

I left early yesterday and didn't see this, thank God. I've seen other medical emergencies there though. Like the parents who let their 4 year old get heat stroke!!! The poor kid had been crying, saying he was hot and his parents kept ignoring him. The little one that turned pale white and fell backwards. A couple of my friends and I got up and got security. I remember someone getting the kid water and I also remember hearing the parents say that the child had had a fever earlier but they didn't think much of it. Yeah, serious headdesking that day. We went to check on the kid later and he had been taken to the hospital but was okay for the most part.

i hope that the parents of the kid with heat stroke had a long talk with child protective services.

sigh, some people shouldnt be allowed to care for children at all.

I hope so too. I honestly don't remember much more than the poor kid crying, suddenly being quiet, turning my head and seeing him fall backwards. The thing that got me at the time wasn't the whole hydration issue, it was the fact the parents said they knew he has a low fever that morning and brought him anyway. If you want to see faire that bad, get a babysitter.

As for this 10 year old, I have a feeling this was all 10 year old boy. ;-)

Ouch!

And parents should always have lots and lots of drinks for kids. I've known this since all my kids were newborn! They go through drinks quickly for a reason.

Yeap! Drinks are pretty cheap at MDRF; it's only $1 for herbal tea, soda, or a water bottle. Most people seem to have that lying around on the floor of their car. So, really, there was no excuse for letting a 4 year old get heat stroke like that. ...also, the snow cones in orange peels are really good and help hydrate.

But, like I said to [livejournal.com profile] fabricdragon, it wasn't so much the hyrdation as much as you just don't bring a kid who has a fever outside all day when it's 90+. The kid was clearly sick and for his parents to act the way they did just really got me.

Hmmm. When a child was injured a few years ago with fire, all fire acts were banned... does this mean food on a stick will be banned? (yes, I'm being a little facetious, not sure faire could function if most of the food wasn't on a stick)

I doubt it. The fire incident showed that the performers did have some fault (not fencing off the area and allowing playtrons to participate). The stake incident...well, it sounds like it's all 10 year old boy. There wasn't any fault of the faire since anything can be used as a weapon and can hurt you and it wasn't involving a stunt performed as part of the faire.

Besides that, they were still serving all the food on stakes on Monday. :-)
