I went to hobby lobby today and bought the fabric I've been wanting for a 1530's Saxon court gown. It's 100% synthetic but look at that pattern! I'm pairing it with a red cotton velvet I have.

The middle trim -what do you think? 18th Century, yea or nay?

I doubt you'd find a good silk in that brocade without taking out a mortguage for it. In this case, I'd say a good find!

The middle trim looks a bit heavy/dense for true 18thC. Fly fringe, which is what I think this is trying to emulate, would be fairly light and airy. Not bad though.

Lol! Too true. I think the last fabric I saw that was close was about $150 a yard. This one was only $10. :-)

Hmmm, I might use it for maybe something Victorian or Steampunk then.

Awesome fabric! Definitely one of those "who cares the fiber is wrong" cases! I haven't found any great fabric finds at my HL - I'm still waiting.

Trim - depends on the application. In combination with some self trim (puffs, gathers etc) it could work. I wouldn't just stick it around a neckline, if that makes sense. I'm not sure how I feel about the pearls, again depends on the application. It’d be fun on a hat for sure...

The HL near me seems to have a lot of really good home decor (drapery stuff that you can use in historical dress application) and quilting fabrics. They don't have much in terms of actual apparel fabrics. Luckily, my Joanns does so it's not much of an issue.

Based on everyone's suggestions, I think I'll nix the 18th c idea and either go storybook or Victorian (the Victorians had everything!) The trim was just too cute in the store to pass up but I really wasn't sure what to pair it with.

Love that damask!!

The trim... the colors look a little too fake-bright for 18th c. to me. It's certainly pretty though! Maybe try sun-bleaching it?

I think the colors are just off due to the flash. The trims behind it are black to the left and a lovely goldenish cream to the right. In the photo, it looks white. :-/

The real colors are about two shades darker than the photo (as I'm holding it up and comparing it to my baby laptop screen...). Based on everyone's suggestions, though, I'm thinking either using it for a storybook (ie fantastical) outfit or Victorian.
