I've been sewing!
Jan. 14th, 2012 01:27 amSo...
I decided against trim.
Let me explain; for the past week I've been debating on "this" trim or "that" trim or maybe "that" one. They all went. They all would look fine. I didn't like any of them. One would make it look too renn fair and another well, I didn't want to use it on a dress I wasn't hand sewing. So, I gave up. And the dress looks gorgeous. And period correct for 1550's/1560's Florence actually. I'm not entirely sure how I did that.
The dress itself is out of a light burgundy uncut corduroy. It looks like some of the materials used based on the paintings of the period. The color is exactly right for the time period as well. The sleeves are just regular trapezoids but I did something slightly different this time - I used ribbon to make ribbon "loops" at the top of the sleeve so I could button the sleeves to the dress. I know there is a portrait showing a similar method but I can't recall where it is right now. (or, at least, that she has buttons at the top of the sleeve)It looks really cool and makes the dress look neat.
I have to finish the black forepart in the morning as well as the stupid eyelets but that's it. The dress, itself, is sewn. Oh, might have to hem it but that shouldn't be too bad on the sewing machine.
