why I should never be around raw silk....

So I went shopping with Mom. This in itself is not newsworthy at all. However what happened when we reached the petite section (she's 5'3") is. I saw a gorgeous black and tan crocheted top. It was beautiful. I picked it up and realized, very quickly, what it was made of....raw silk. Raw silk has a very distict smell. Normally I can smell it before touching it and know to stay away. I use to have a lovely raw silk shirt but I kept getting sick when I wore it and I slowly realized I was allergic to it so I gave the shirt to the Purple Heart. Since then, I've stayed as far away from the stuff as possible. Well, today, I didn't smell it before I touched it. Very Very big mistake. Mom came over and loved the shirt too. I told her I couldn't come near because I was allergic. I don't think she believed me at first because she took it with her to try on. By the time she was trying it on in the fitting room, my throat was covered in hives and I could barely breathe. I went inside the fitting room and she took one look at me, looked at the shirt, and said "Well, I can't get this then". She gave me some money to go to the cafe in the shop and get a drink so I could take the severe allergy pills. They, unfortunatly, only had sit down meals so I just went to the ladies room to get water. Probably not the best, but I was just trying to take some pills so I could breathe normally and really didn't care. The pills helped and I was okay after 5 minutes. The only problem is the tylonel severe allergy pills knock me out. But I've learned my lesson. No more raw silk...ever. I guess that means no gowns out of the stuff either. :-) I did work on the gowns again today. I decided I hated the way the clients gown is coming along and took it back apart. I'll put it together in the morning before I have the interview tomorrow. I took the insert out and I'm going to place it differently so it looks nice on the dress. |
