It's the reason I keep telling people to get the heck off of Facebook even though very few seem to want to listen. You can email friends, you can call family. My family actually has their own "list" email so we don't leave anyone out of the loop. If you have vacation photos you want to share, email them. Twitter and google aren't much better but they are better about explaining their business practices..

I'm going to just nod my head and agree with you chapter and verse on that. Unfortunately it is where most people are located so its kind of a necessary evil (and I hate phrasing it that way, since you're right, it isn't a "necessary" anything). I think the only time I was ever glad to be able to update the world about my status on such a general scale was during the Mumbai attack, and that's hardly an everyday occurrence in anyone's life I know.
