A funny thing happened while doing costuming research

I've had this trim for *years*. I've always wanted to do something with it and thought it looked vaugely 1860's. The only trim I have that matches is is a complete crocheted circle of lace - that is so big, I'd have to gather it. Eventually, I gave up on the idea of using this trim and went with the black velvet instead.

However...

The other day, I saw this in La Mode illustrée.

It's a crocheted grape cluster from 1861!   I can see some lady thinking it would make a great trim for her gown and making the trim I have.  Glad I didn't use it!!
